Roman, Stella (real name, Florica Vierica Alma Stela Blasu)
Roman, Stella (real name, Florica Vierica Alma Stela Blasu) , Romanian-American soprano; b. Cluj, March 25, 1904; d. N.Y., Feb. 12, 1992. She was a Student of Pfeiffer in Cluj, Cosma, Vulpescu, and Pes-sione in Bucharest, Narducci and Poli-Randaccio in Milan, and Baldassare- Tedeschi and Ricci in Rome. In 1932 she made her operatic debut in Piacenza. In 1940 she made her first appearance at Milan’s La Scala as the Empress in Die Frau ohne Schatten. On Jan. 1, 1941, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Aida. She remained on its roster until 1950, becoming best known for such roles as Gioconda, Amelia, Leonora in II Trovatore, Desdemona, and Tosca.
