Salmanov, Vadim (Nikolaievich)

Salmanov, Vadim (Nikolaievich) , Russian composer and teacher; b. St. Petersburg, Nov. 4, 1912; d. there (Leningrad), Feb. 27, 1978. He studied piano with his father and theory with Akimenko. He studied composition with Gnessin at the Leningrad Cons. (1936–41), where he later was head of its composition dept. (1947–51), a teacher (1951–65), and a prof. (from 1965). His early works are marked by broad Russian melodism, with the harmonic structure following the models of Prokofiev and Shostakovich; after 1960 he adopted more advanced techniques, including dodecaphony.
