Santoro, Cláudio (b Manáos, Brazil, 1919; d Brasilia, 1989). Brazil. composer and violinist. Co-founder Brazilian SO, playing vn. in it 1941–7. Teacher at various Brazil. institutions, mus. dir. Brasilia cultural foundation 1962–7. Mus. dir., Teatro Novo, Rio, 1968–9. Prof. of comp., Heidelberg-Mannheim Hochschule für Musik, 1970–8. Comp. 8 ballets and many scores for radio, TV, and films. Other works incl. 11 syms. (1940–84); 3 pf. concs.; 2 vn. concs.; vc. conc.; 5 vn. sonatas (1940–51); 4 vc. sonatas (1943–63); 7 str. qts. (1943–65); Ode to Stalingrad (1947); oratorio Berlin, 13th August (1961–2); and songs. 4th sym. is subtitled Brasilia. Ballet Zuimaaluti is based on 5th sym. and was cond. by Santoro at CG 1960. Began as atonalist, later wrote in nationalist style. Was for a time admirer of Communist Russia.
