Santoro, Claudio

Santoro, Claudio, distinguished Brazilian composer, conductor, and teacher; b. Maná, Nov. 23, 1919; d. Brasília, March 27, 1989. He studied at the Rio de Janeiro Cons. and received training from Guerra and Koellreutter. In 1946 he held a Guggenheim fellowship. In 1947 he received a French scholarship and pursued his studies in Paris with Boulanger and Eugène Bigot. He was awarded the Lili Boulanger Prize in 1948. In 1965 he held a Ford Foundation scholarship and was active in Berlin. From 1970 to 1978 he taught at the Univ. of Heidelberg-Mannheim. In 1979 he settled in Brasília, where he was a conductor at the Univ. and of the orch. of the National Theater until his death. He also appeared as a guest conductor in South America and Europe. In his earliest works, he composed mainly in the 12-tone manner. After a period in which he wrote in an accessible style, he returned to advanced techniques, including aleatory.
