Schein, Ann, American pianist; b. White Plains, N.Y, Nov. 10, 1939. She studied with Glenn Gunn in Washington, D.C., Mieczyslaw Munz at the Peabody Cons. of Music in Baltimore, Artur Rubinstein (1961–63), and Dame Myra Hess (1961–65). She made her London debut in a recital in 1958; after appearing as a soloist with the N.Y. Phil, and making her Carnegie Hall recital debut in 1962, she toured widely. In 1968 she organized the People-to-People Music Committee in an effort to encourage amicable relations between nations via the art of music. She taught at the Peabody Cons. (from 1980) and the Aspen (Colo.) School of Music (from 1984). Her husband is the violinist Earl Carlyss. In addition to her performances of Chopin, she has won accolades for her interpretations of works by contemporary composers.
