Scimone, Claudio

Scimone, Claudio, Italian conductor, musicologist, and music educator; b. Padua, Dec. 23, 1934. He studied conducting with Zecchi, Mitropoulos, and Ferrara. In 1959 he founded the noted chamber orch. I Solisti Veneti (in Padua), and made numerous tours with it, presenting works from the Baroque to the avant-garde. He also acquired a fine reputation as a scholar specializing in Italian music; supervised a modern ed. of the works of Giuseppe Tartini, and prepared a complete edition of Rossini. He taught at the Venice Cons. (1961–67) and the Verona Cons. (1967–74); then was a teacher and director of the Padua Cons. (1974–83). In addition to numerous articles for various music journals, he publ. Segno, Significato, Interpretazione (1970).
