Scigaj, Leonard M. (?)–2005

OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Died of a heart attack April 16, 2005, in Blacksburg, VA. Educator and author. Scigaj was an English professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. A graduate of Canisius University in 1967, he then attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, earning an M.A. in 1968 and a Ph.D. in 1977. He joined the Virginia Tech English department the next year, becoming an associate professor and specializing in modern poetry. Of particular interest to Scigaj was poetry with environmental themes, as he himself was a passionate environmentalist. Recipient of the Virginia Tech Certificate of Teaching Excellence in 1996, he was the author of several books, including two on poet Ted Hughes and the work Sustainable Poetry: Four American Ecopoets (1999).
