Soffel, Doris, German mezzo-soprano; b. Hechingen, May 12, 1948. She received training in voice from Marianne Schech in Munich (1968–73). After singing in Das Liebesverbot at the Bayreuth Youth Festival in 1972, she sang in Stuttgart from 1973 to 1976. In 1976 she made her first appearance at the Bayreuth Festival as Waltraute, and returned there as Fricka in 1983. She appeared as Puck in Oberon at the Bregenz Festival in 1977. She was engaged as Monteverdi’s Poppea in Toronto and as Sextus in La Clemenza di Tito at London’s Covent Garden in 1983. After singing in the premiere of Reimann’s Troades in Munich in 1986, she portrayed Angelina in La Cenerentola at the Berlin State Opera in 1987. In 1991 she appeared in Munich in the premiere of Pendericki’s Ubu Rex, returning there in 1994 as Preziosilla. She sang Judith in Bluebeard’s Castle at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and as Charlotte in Werther in Parma in 1995. In 1997 she appeared in recital in London.
