Sopeña (Ibáñez), Federico
Sopeña (Ibáñez), Federico, noted Spanish musicologist; b. Valladolid, Jan. 25, 1917; d. Madrid, May 22, 1991. He studied in Bilbao and Madrid, and later obtained a doctorate in theology at the Università Gregoriana in Rome. He was active as a music critic, and from 1951 to 1956, was director of the Madrid Cons.; was also the founder and publisher of the music magazine Música. He publ. (in Madrid) a number of useful monographs of Spanish composers, including Joaquín Turina (1943 second ed., 1952) and Joaquín Rodrigo (1946; second ed., rev. 1970); also Historia de la música (1946; 5th ed., 1974), La música europea contemporánea (1952), Historia de la música escañola contemporánea (1958; second ed., 1967), and Música y literatura (1974).
