Stachowski, Marek

Stachowski, Marek, Polish composer and pedagogue; b. Piekary Šlaskie, March 21, 1936. He received training in composition (from Penderecki) and in theory at the State Higher School of Music (later the Academy of Music) in Krakow (1963–68). From 1967 he taught composition there, and also served as the Academy’s rector from 1993 to 1999. He also taught composition at the Inst. of Musicology at the Jagiellonian Univ. in Kraków from 1979. In 1981 he was granted the state title of prof. He won first prize in the Szymanowski Competition in 1974, was honored with the Minister of Culture and Arts Award, second Class, in 1984, won the Polish Composers’ Union Award in 1989, and received the Alfred Jurzykowski Foundation Award of the U.S. in 1990.
