Strauss, Franz Joseph (b Parkstein, 1822; d Munich, 1905). Ger. horn-player and composer. Prin. hn., Munich Court opera orch. 1847–89. Taught at Munich Acad. until 1896. Cond. semi-professional orch. (Wilde Gungl) 1875–96. Although he disliked Wagner's mus., played in several Wagner premières and was consulted by composer on Siegfried's hn.-call. Wrote hn. conc., works for hn. and pf., etc. The composer Richard Strauss was his son by his 2nd wife.
