Stückenschmidt, Hans Heinz
Stückenschmidt, Hans Heinz eminent German music critic and writer on music; b. Strasbourg, Nov. 1, 1901; d. Berlin, Aug. 15, 1988. He studied violin, piano, and composition. He was chief music critic of Prague’s Bohemia (1928-29) and of the Berliner Zeitung am Mittag (1929-34); also was active as a lecturer on contemporary music. In 1934 he was forbidden to continue journalism in Germany, and went to Prague, where he wrote music criticism until 1941, when his activities were stopped once more by the occupation authorities; then was drafted into the German army. In 1946 he became director of the dept. for new music of the radio station RIAS in Berlin; also was a lecturer (1948-49), reader (1949-53), and prof. (1953-67) of music history at the Technical Univ. there. With Josef Rufer, he founded and ed. the journal Stimmen (Berlin, 1947-49).
