SuthaUS,(Heinrich) Ludwig, eminent German tenor; b. Cologne, Dec. 12, 1906;d. Berlin, Sept. 7, 1971. He received his training in Cologne.In 1928 he made his operatic debut as Walther von Stolzing in Aachen. After singing in Essen (1931–33) and Stuttgart (1933–41), he was a member of the Berlin State Opera (1941–49).In 1943 he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival as Walther von Stolzing,and sang there again in 1944, 1956,and 1957.From 1948 to 1961 he was a member ofthe Berlin Städtische Oper,and then of its successor,the Deutsche Oper,from 1961 to 1965.In 1949 he appeared as the Emperor in Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Teatro Colónin Buenos Aires.He made his U.S.debut as Aegisthus at the San Francisco Opera in 1953, and that same year made his Covent Garden debut in London as Tristan.Suthaus was one of the outstanding Heldenten–ors of his day. In addition to his Wagnerian roles, he also excelled as Florestan, Tchaikovsky’s Hermann, Verdi’s Otello,and Janá ček’s Števa.
