Tansman, Aleksander (b Lódź, 1897; d Paris, 1986). Polish-born Fr. composer and pianist (Fr. cit. 1938). Settled in Paris 1919, where he was encouraged by Ravel. Amer. début 1927. World tour 1933. Settled in USA 1940–6, when he wrote film mus. in Hollywood. Returned to Paris 1946. Works incl. 6 operas; 7 syms. (1925–44); 2 pf. concs.; va. conc.; vn. conc.; vc. conc.; cl. conc.; gui. concertino; oratorio Isaiah the Prophet; Conc. for Orch.; Resurrection, orch.; ob. concertino; fl. concertino; 8 str. qts. (1917–56); vc. sonata, etc. Wrote book on Stravinsky.
