Tilmouth, Michael

Tilmouth, Michael, English musicologist; b. Grimsby, Lincolnshire, Nov. 30, 1930; d. Edinburgh, Nov. 12, 1987. He was a student of Dart, John Stevens, and Orr at Christ’s Coll., Cambridge (B.A., 1954; Ph.D., 1960, with the diss. Chamber Music in England, 1675-1720). He was asst. lecturer (1959-62), lecturer (1962-71), and Tovey Prof, of Music (from 1971) at the Univ. of Edinburgh. From 1968 to 1976 he was ed. of the RMA Research Chronicle. He also was general series ed. of Musica Britannica, for which he compiled the chamber music of Matthew Locke, XXXI-XXXII (1971-72).
