Tipo, Maria (Luisa)
Tipo, Maria (Luisa), Italian pianist and pedagogue; b. Naples, Dec. 23, 1931. She studied in Naples before completing her training with Casella and Agosti. In 1948 she won 2nd prize (no 1st prize was given) at the Geneva International Competition, and returned in 1949 to capture its 1st prize; after winning 3rd prize at the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Competition in Brussels in 1952, she toured in Europe and abroad; in 1955 she made her N.Y. debut; she eventually devoted much time to teaching, giving courses at the Bolzano Cons. and in Florence and Geneva. After an absence of 32 years, she returned to N.Y. in 1991 as a recitalist at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She championed the cause of traditional Italian keyboard music, most notably the works of Scarlatti and Clementi.
