Tritto, Giacomo (Domenico Mario Antonio Pasquale Giuseppe), Italian composer and teacher; b. Altamura, April 2, 1733; d. Naples, Sept. 16, 1824. He studied with Cafaro at the Cons. della Pietà de’ Turchini in Naples, becoming maestrino there and Cafaro’s assistant; was made maestro straordinario in 1785, secondo maestro in 1793, and primo maestro in 1799. In 1804 he was appointed maestro of the royal chamber. Bellini, Spontini, Mercadante, Meyerbeer, and Conti were his pupils. He wrote over 50 operas, both comic and serious; many were produced in various Neapolitan theaters, and others in Rome, Madrid, Vienna, and Venice; however, they were generally undistinguished. He also composed much sacred music. He publ.
