Trowell, Brian (Lewis)
Trowell, Brian (Lewis), English musicologist; b. Wokingham, Berkshire, Feb. 21, 1931. He was educated at Christ’s Hospital and Gonville and Caius Coll., Cambridge (B.A., 1953; Mus.B., 1956; Ph.D., 1960, with the diss. Music Under the Later Plantagenets). He taught at the Univ. of Birmingham (1957-62) and at King’s Coll., London (1964-65). From 1967 to 1970 he was head of radio opera for the BBC in London. In 1970 he was Regents’ Prof, at the Univ. of Calif, at Berkeley. He rejoined the faculty of King’s Coll. as a reader in music in 1970, and then was King Edward VII Prof. of Music there from 1974 to 1988. In 1988 he became Heather Prof. of Music at the Univ. of Oxford, retiring in 1996. He was president of the Royal Musical Assn. from 1983 to 1988. From 1983 to 1993 he was chairman of the editorial committee of Musica Britannica, and from 1987 to 1998 he was founding chairman of the Handel Inst. Trust and Council. Trowell is an authority on English music of the 15thcentury, on Elgar, and on opera in all eras. He has contributed valuable articles to various journals, reference works, and other publications. With M. and I. Bent, he edited the 2nd edition, rev., of Dunstable’s complete works in Musica Britannica, VIII (1970).
