Tuckwell, Barry (Emmanuel)
Tuckwell, Barry (Emmanuel), noted Australian-born American horn player and conductor; b. Melbourne, March 5, 1931. He studied horn with Alan Mann in Sydney. After playing in the Sydney Sym. Orch. (1947-50), he played in the Hallé Orch. in Manchester (1951-53) and the Scottish National Orch. in Glasgow (1953-54). In 1954-55 he was 1sthorn in the Bournemouth Sym. Orch., and then held that position with the London Sym. Orch. from 1955 to 1968. He subsequently pursued a solo career, achieving recognition as one of the finest horn virtuosos of the day. From 1963 to 1974 to he was prof, of horn at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In addition to the standard horn literature, Tuckwell also plays works composed especially for him, including scores by Thea Musgrave, Richard Rodney Bennett, Iain Hamilton, Alun Hoddinott, and Don Banks. In later years, he became active as a conductor and appeared as a guest conductor with orchs. in Australia, Europe, and the U.S. From 1980 to 1983 he was conductor of the Tasmanian Sym. Orch. In 1982 he became music director of the newly founded Md. Sym. Orch. in Hagerstown, a position he retained until 1998. He 1965 he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. In 1996 he became a naturalized American citizen.
