Worked in NY 1940–50 as dancer and choreog. Royal Swed. Ballet 1949–50, NY City Ballet 1951–2. Dir. NY Met Opera Ballet Sch. 1950. Joined teaching staff, Juilliard Sch. Dir., Royal Swed. Ballet 1963–4. Ass. dir., Amer. Ballet Th. 1974. One of foremost and most perceptive 20th-cent. choreogs. Ballets (composers in parentheses) incl.
