Ulanowsky, Paul
Ulanowsky, Paul, Austrian-born American pianist and teacher; b. Vienna, March 4,1908; d. N.Y., Aug. 4, 1968. He studied theory and composition with Marx and piano with Eisenberger at the Vienna Academy of Music, taking diplomas in conducting and composition (1930). He also received private instruction in violin and viola, and took courses in musicology at the Univ. of Vienna (1926-30) with Adler, Fischer, and Ficker. After performing in Vienna, he went to the U.S. as accompanist to Enid Szantho in 1935. He decided to settle there and became a naturalized American citizen in 1943. From 1937 to 1951 he toured as accompanist to Lotte Lehmann and other celebrated artists. From 1960 he served as the pianist of the Bach Aria Group. He taught at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood (summers, 1950-56) and at Boston Univ. (1951-55). In 1952-53 he was a visiting artist at the Univ. of 111., where he became a prof, in I960.
