Vick, Graham
Vick, Graham, English opera producer; b. Liverpool, Dec. 30, 1953. He was educated at the Royal Northern Coll. of Music in Manchester. After gaining experience at Glyndebourne and with the English Music Theatre, he produced Madama Butterflyat the English National Opera in London in 1984. From 1984 to 1987 he was director of productions at the Scottish Opera in
Glasgow. In 1986 he staged Die Entführung aus dem Serailin St. Louis. He became artistic director of the City of Birmingham Touring Opera in 1987. In 1989 he produced the British premiere of Berio’s Un re in ascoltoat London’s Covent Garden, returning there to stage Mitridatein 1992, Die Meistersinger von Nürnbergin 1993, King Arthurin 1995, and The Midsummer Marriagein 1996. In 1992 he produced The Queen of Spadesat the Glyndebourne Festival, and in 1994 he was made its director of productions, a position he retained until 2000. His first staging at the Metropolitan Opera came in 1994 when he produced Lady Macbeth of the District of Mtsensk. In 1997 he produced Parsifalat the Opéra de la Bastille in Paris. In 1999 he staged Schoenberg’s Moses und Aronat the Metropolitan Opera. His productions are both innovative and tasteful.
