Vopelius, Gottfried, German composer; b. Herwigsdorf, near Zittau, Jan. 28, 1635; d. Leipzig, Feb. 3, 1715. He studied at the Univ. of Leipzig, and was made collaborator ultimus at the St. Nikolai school in Leipzig in 1671; was made Kantor there and at the Nikolaikirche in 1676. He publ. the valuable collection Neu Leipziger Gesangbuch, von den schönsten und besten Liedern verfasset…mit 4. 5. bis 6. stimmen, deren Melodeyen Theils aus Johann Herman Scheins Cantional, und Andern guten Autoribus zusammen getragen, theils aber selbsten componiret (Leipzig, 1682), which includes over 400 works, among them 3 by Vopelius.
