Warland, Dale
Warland, Dale, eminent American conductor and composer; b. Fort Dodge, Iowa, April 14, 1932. He was educated at St. Olaf Coll. (B.A., 1954), at the Univ. of Minn. (M.A. in theory and composition, 1960), and at the Univ. of Southern Calif, in Los Angeles (D.M.A. in choral conducting, 1965). After serving as director of choral music at Humboldt State Coll. in Arcata, Calif., and at Keuka Coll. in Keuka Park, N.Y, he was prof, of music and director of choral activities at Macalester Coll. in St. Paul, Minn. (1967-85). In 1972 he established the Dale Warland Singers, a professional mixed chorus, which he led with notable distinction. While his expansive repertoire ranges from the 16th century to the present era, his primary emphasis has been on music of the 20th century, including the commissioning of new works. —NS/LK/DM
