Webb, Charles H(aizlip, Jr.)
Webb, Charles H(aizlip, Jr.), American music educator, pianist, organist, and conductor; b. Dallas, Feb. 14, 1933. He was educated at Southern Methodist Univ. (A.B. and M.Mus., 1955) and at Ind. Univ. (D.Mus., 1964). In 1957-58 he was asst. to the dean of the School of Music at Southern Methodist Univ. In 1958 he joined the faculty of the School of Music at Ind. Univ. as an instructor in piano, becoming an asst. prof, and asst. dean in 1964, assoc. prof, in 1967, assoc. dean in 1969, and dean in 1973. Upon his retirement in 1997, he was named a Distinguished Prof. Under Webb’s leadership, the School of Music not only retained but enhanced its position among the world’s leading schools of music. From 1961 he served as organist of the First Methodist Church in Bloomington, Ind. He also was conductor of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir from 1967 to 1981. In addition to his appearances as a concert organist, he also made tours in the U.S. in duo recitals with the pianist Wallace Hornibrook. In 1983 he was named a member of the Ind. Academy.
