Weinmann, Karl

Weinmann, Karl, eminent German musicologist; b. Vohenstrauss, Upper Palatinate, Dec. 22, 1873; d. Pielenhofen, near Regensburg, Sept. 26, 1929. He was a pupil of Haberl and Haller at the Kirchenmusikschule in Regensburg, in Berlin, and in Innsbruck; after further study with Peter Wagner at the Univ. of Freiburg im Breisgau, he obtained the degree of Ph.D. there (1905) with the diss. Das Hymnarium Parisiense; later obtained a doctorate in theology at the Kirchenmusikschule in Regensburg (1917). After his ordination to the priesthood, he became a prof. at the Kirchenmusikschule in Regensburg; in 1910, succeeded Haberl as its director. He was ed. of the Kirchenmusikalisches Jahrbuch (1909-11), Musica Sacra (from 1911), and Cäcilienverein-sorgan (from 1926). He ed. for Pustet (after the Editio vaticana) Römisches Gradualbuch (1909; 4^th ed., 1928); Graduale (1910); Kyriale (1911); Totenoffizium (1912; 2^nd ed., 1928); Graduale parvum (1913); Römisches Vesperbuch mit Psalmenbuch (1915); Karwochenbuch (1924); Feier der heiligen Karwoche (1925); Sonntagsvesper und Komplet (2^nd ed., 1928). He was also ed. of the collection Kirchenmusik, for which he wrote Geschichte der Kirchenmusik (1906; 4^th ed., 1925; Eng. tr., 1910; also tr. into French, Italian, Polish, and Hungarian), and monographs on Leonhard Paminger (1907) and Carl Proske (1909). Other writings included Palestrinas Geburtsjahr (Regensburg, 1915), Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht: Die Geschichte des Liedes zu seinem WO. Geburtstag (1918; 2^nd ed., 1920), and Das Konzil von Trent und die Kirchenmusik (1919).
