Welting Ruth
Welting, Ruth, American soprano; b. Memphis, Tenn., May 11,1948; d. Ashville, N.C., Dec. 16,1999. She received training from Daniel Ferro in N.Y., Luigi Ricci in Rome, and Jeanne Reiss in Paris. In 1970 she made her operatic debut as Blondchen at the N.Y.C. Opera. As a guest artist, she sang in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Sante Fe, and San Francisco. In 1975 she made her first appearance at London’s Covent Garden as Zerbinetta, a role that she also sang at her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. on March 20, 1976. She continued to make appearances at the Metropolitan Opera until 1994. In 1979 she sang the Fairy Godmother in Cendrillon in Ottawa and in 1980 in Washington, D.C. In 1982 she made her first appearance at the Salzburg Festival as Zerbinetta. She sang Marie in La Fille du Régiment in Barcelona in 1984. In 1990 she appeared as Ophelia in Thomas’ Hamlet at the Chicago Lyric Opera. Among her other roles were Zerlina, Gilda, Norina, Adele, Sophie, and the Princess in L’Enfant et les Sortilèges. She also appeared frequently as a lieder artist.
