Whyte, Ian (b Dunfermline, 1901; d Glasgow, 1960). Scottish conductor and composer. Mus. dir., BBC (Scotland) 1931–46. Formed BBC Scottish Orch. 1935, conducting it after 1945 in adventurous programmes. Wrote operas, 2 syms., sym.-poems Edinburgh and Tam o'Shanter, ballet Donald of the Burthens, concs. (pf., vn., va.), choral works, and songs. OBE 1952.
