Wiora, Walter

Wiora, Walter, important German musicologist; b. Kattowitz, Dec. 30, 1906; d. Tutzing, Feb. 8, 1997. He studied in Berlin at the Hochschule für Musik (1925-27) and received training in musicology from Abert, Blume, Hornbostel, Sachs, Schering, and Schiinemann. He continued his studies with Gurlitt at the Univ. of Freiburg im Breisgau (Ph.D., 1937, with the diss. Die Variantenbildung im Volkslied: Ein Beitrag zur systematischen Musikwissenschaft), and completed his Habilitation there in 1941 with his Die Herkunft der Melodien in Kretschmers und Zuccalmaglios Sammlung(publ, in an enl. ed. as Die rheinisch-bergischen Melodien bei Zuccalmaglio und Brahms, Bad Godesberg, 1953). He was an asst. at the Deutsches Volksliedarchiv in Freiburg im Breisgau (1936-41). After serving as a reader in musicology at the Univ. of Posen, he returned to Freiburg im Breisgau and was archivist at the Deutsches Volksliedarchiv (1946-58), and then was prof, of musicology at the Univ. of Kiel (1958-64) and at the Univ. of Saarbrücken (1964-72). His principal achievement was his advocacy of a system of “essential research” in musicology that utilizes both traditional and contemporary principles.
