Wolf-Ferrari, Ermanno
Wolf-Ferrari, Ermanno (b Venice, 1876; d Venice, 1948). It. composer, son of Ger. father and It. mother. Dir., Liceo Benedetto Marcello 1903–9. Prof. of comp. Salzburg Mozarteum 1939–45. Wrote mainly operas, being adept at light works based on Goldoni comedies, elegantly scored and immediately appealing. Some were produced in Ger. before It. Prin. works:OPERAS: Irene (1896); Cenerentola (1897–1900, rev. 1902); Le donne curiose (1903); I quatro rusteghi (c.1904–5); Il segreto di Susanna (1909); I gioielli della Madonna (1911); L'amore medico (1913); Gliamanti sposi (1914–16, 1925); La veste di cielo (c.1917–25, 1927); Sly (1927); La vedova scaltra (1931); Il Campiello (c.1934); La dama boba (1939); Gli dei a Tebe (1943); modern edn. of Idomeneo (Mozart), Munich 1931.
