Wolfe, Paul (Cecil)
Wolfe, Paul (Cecil), American conductor, violinist, harpsichordist, and oboist; b. N.Y., May 8, 1926. He commenced music training as a child and made his debut as a violinist at N.Y.’s Barbison Hall in 1938. He studied at Queen’s Coll. in N.Y. (1942-45) and received training in violin from Mischakoff, Shumsky, Totenberg, and Varid, in oboe from Anton Maly, and in conducting from Barzin and Fritz Mahler. From 1946 to 1949 he was concertmaster and assistant conductor of the U.S. Air Force Orch. in Washington, D.C. He was assistant conductor of the National Orchestral Assn. (1950-61) and conductor of the Fla. West Coast Sym. Orch. in Sarasota, a position he held for 35 years. He also remained active as an instrumentalist.
