Zimmermann, Anton

Zimmermann, Anton, Austrian composer; b. Pressburg, 1741; d. there, Oct. 16,1781. He was organist at St. Martin’s Church in Pressburg, and in 1776 he was named Kapellmeister and court composer to Count Joseph Batthyany, the Archibishop (later cardinal) of Hungary. His works include Narcisse et Pierre, Singspiel (Pressburg, 1772; not extant), Andromeda und Perseus, melodrama (Vienna, April 23, 1781), and Zelmor und Ermide, melodrama (n.d.); also about 25 syms. (serenatas), concertos, much chamber music, including various nocturnes, cassations, 12 string quintets, 6 string quartets, sonatas, etc., and much sacred music.
