PERSONAL:

Born Kali Prasad Chandra, January 2, 1866, in Calcutta, India; died September 8, 1939, in Calcutta, India; son of Rasiklal (a teacher of English) and Nayantara (Devi) Chandra; name changed, 1886. Education: Studied with Sri Ramakrishna; studied Buddhism in Tibet.

CAREER:

Initiated into Sannyasa order, 1886; joined monastery in Barangore, India, 1886; Vedanta Society, New York, NY, affiliate, 1894-96, preacher in London, England, 1896-97, and United States, 1897-c. 1910; independent Hindu preacher, c. 1910-21; member of Vedanta Society in Belur, India, 1921-c.1923. Founder of religious centers in Calcutta and Darjeeling, India, after 1923; lecturer in London, England, including appearance at Theosophical Society, 1896, and at U.S. institutions, including Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences.
