SIDELIGHTS:

Carrie Adams is a British chick-lit author who penned the novel The Godmother, which she described as chick-noir. Prior to becoming a published author, Adams worked on a game reserve and maintained a career within the oil trade industry. She is married to theater producer Adam Spiegel, with whom she has two young daughters. Her debut novel, The Godmother, has been described by critics as typical British chick-lit fare for the masses, but with a twist. Instead of focusing solely on the life of a thirty-something single female protagonist, Adams's novel focuses on children and family life.

In Ann Oldenburg's review of the book for USA Today, the critic described Adams's debut novel as "endearing" and full of "British sass and wit." Oldenburg also went on to write that Adams's work contains "characters [that] are complex: troubled, sympathetic and very different from one another," which contributes to a "story [that] will sweep you away." A reviewer for the Trashionista Web site described Adams's book as having "flashes of genius" and "hilarious one-liners." With The Godmother Adams has created a book that deals with topics such as death and heartbreak, and Booklist contributor Emily Cook declared that "Adams has written a … charming novel that will surprise readers with its depth and honesty." According to a Publishers Weekly reviewer, Adams's novel not only appeals to the masses, but is also "notches up from usual chick lit and mom lit fare."
