SIDELIGHTS:
Philip J. Adler told CA: "My history journal articles on Eastern Europe were written because of a desire—never fulfilled—to understand the psychology of nationalism. My unpublished doctoral dissertation on the South Slavs grew out of a generic interest in interwar Yugoslavia. My book was the result of twenty-five years of classroom teaching and disappointment at the offerings for the introductory level lecturer courses. I thought I could do better (and I think I did!)."
