Born August 15, 1955, in Rochester, MN; son of William H. (a surgeon) and Mary M. (a nurse and homemaker; maiden name, Green) Barnes; married Heather R. Simcoe (a painter and printer), July 5, 1995. Education: McMaster University, B.A. (with honors), 1986; University of Toronto, B.Ed., 1987.

CAREER:

Private English tutor to high school and university students and to speakers of English as a second language, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, 1995—. Also worked as an elementary and high school English teacher at schools in Ontario.

Danuta Gleed Literary Award for best first book of stories, Writers' Union of Canada, 1999, for Aquarium.
