SIDELIGHTS:
Beverly Bartlett is a longtime journalist and a huge fan of the musician Bruce Springsteen, a love that she incorporated into her first novel, Princess Izzy and the E Street Shuffle: The Unlikely Story of Isabella, Her Secret Advisor, Her Jealous Husband, and How It All Affected Me. In her novel, Bartlett tells the story of Isabella Cordage, who wins the heart of the prince of the imaginary land of Bisbania. Called "Princess Izzy" by the press, which follows her every move, Izzy is concerned about an old picture of her kissing an American mechanic, Geoffrey, who worked on her car and introduced her to the lyrics of Bruce Springsteen during a trip she made years earlier to the United States. Izzy tries to pay for Geoffrey's silence, but Geoffrey and his family end up coming to Bisbania, where he offers Izzy advice in the form of Springsteen's lyrics. Lisa Davis-Craig, writing in the Library Journal, noted that the author "humorously captures how seriously people take the minutiae of royalty." A Kirkus Reviews contributor wrote: "Plane crashes, paternity questions and romantic entanglements are more than enough to keep the plot zooming along," adding that Bartlett's debut is "royally original and captivating." Danielle DeFrain, writing on the FictionAddiction.net Web site, commented that "Bartlett's first-person narration is so engrossing one forgets it's not real." Curled Up with a Good Book Web site contributor Melissa Parcel called the novel "a delightful love story written in a very unique style."
