PERSONAL:

Born January 15, 1841, in New York, NY; died of pneumonia, June 8, 1913, in New York, NY; son of Alanson (in business) and Sarah Mead (Berrian) Briggs; married Julia Valentine Dobbs, 1865; children: Emilie Grace. Education: University of Virginia, graduated; University of Berlin, doctorate; also attended Union Theological Seminary, New York, NY.

CAREER:

Ordained Presbyterian minister, 1870, acquitted of heresy charges, c. 1892, and ordination revoked; ordained Episcopal minister, c. 1899; pastor of a Presbyterian church in Roselle, NY, 1870-74; Union Theological Seminary, New York, NY, professor of Hebrew and cognate languages, 1874-1904, professor of symbolics until 1913, Edward Robinson Professor of Biblical Theology, 1890, also worked as librarian, McAlpin Collection of British history and theology. Worked briefly in business prior to 1865. Military service: Union Army, served briefly during the Civil War.
