SIDELIGHTS:

Carolyn Chambers Clark is a registered nurse practitioner and board-certified as an advanced holistic nurse. The author of books on nursing and wellness, Clark also specializes in holistic nursing, holistic complementary health care, and holistic integrative self-care. Among her books is The Holistic Nursing Approach to Chronic Disease. In addition to discussing approaches to assessing twenty common chronic diseases, from AIDS to sleep disorders, Clark emphasizes the client-healer relationship as she writes about approaches to caring for individuals with these chronic conditions. The author provides an example of a holistic nursing assessment, a collaborative treatment plan with a list of possible interventions, and a discussion of evaluating treatment effects. A SciTech Book News reviewer noted that the author's approaches can be traced back to "Florence Nightingale's theory of natural healing." In Living Well with Anxiety: What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You … That You Need to Know, the author, who has suffered high levels of anxiety, presents information on current knowledge about the causes and effects of anxiety and compares holistic treatments with modern medical approaches. Clark writes about nutrition, supplements, and exercise as approaches that can help and explores negative influences on anxiety, such as drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. In addition, the author offers tips on creating an "Anxiety Success Plan." A Publishers Weekly contributor wrote that "this book provides viable alternatives to traditional medicine."
