Born December 2, 1841, in Cazenovia, NY; died January 14, 1912, in Deland, FL; son of William (a Baptist minister) and Urania (Miner) Clarke; married Emily A. Smith, September 1, 1869. Education: Madison University (now Colgate University), B.A., 1861; Colgate Seminary, B.D., 1863.

CAREER:

Ordained Baptist minister, 1856; pastor of Baptist churches in Keene, NH, 1856-69, Newton Center, MA, 1869-80, and Montreal, Quebec, Canada, 1880-83; Baptist Theological School, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, teacher of New Testament, 1883-87; Colgate Seminary (also known as Hamilton Theological Seminary), Hamilton, NY, instructor, 1887-90, J. J. Joslin Professor of Christian Theology, 1890-1908, then lecturer in Christian ethics. Pastor of Baptist church in Hamilton, NY, beginning 1887. Johns Hopkins University Levering Lecturer, 1899; Oberlin Theological Seminary lecturer, 1901; Harvard University Dudleian Lecturer, 1903; Yale University Nathaniel William Taylor Lecturer, 1905.
