SIDELIGHTS:
Brian Cogan is an educator and writer who writes about music and popular culture. In his first book, The Encyclopedia of Punk Music and Culture, the author, who has his own punk music band, provides information on English and American punk bands from the their rise in the 1960s to the present. The author also looks at numerous bands within the punk subgenres, including hardcore and "oi." Discographies are also included for each band. In addition, the encyclopedia presents numerous entries on topics related to punk music and bands, from tattoos and body art to hair and clothing styles. "As the first encyclopedia devoted to the topic, The Encyclopedia of Punk Music and Culture serves as a specialized supplement to more general works," wrote Paul Cauthen in the Reference & User Services Quarterly. Matthew Moyer, writing in the Library Journal, noted that the author "takes a highly catholic approach to what is and isn't punk, opting not to restrict the movement to a particular locale or time period." Reviewers also noted that the author's book presents more than just a comprehensive, encyclopedic look at punk music. Noting that the author "captures the spirit of punk music and culture," a contributor to the Lawrence Looks at Books Web site also wrote that Cogan "succeeds in conveying the contemporary feelings of excitement and experimentation surrounding the movement."
