Born September 17, 1938, in Brainerd, MN; son of Louis Carl (a Lutheran pastor) and Linnea Marie (a homemaker and church volunteer) Crowner; married August 17, 1963; wife's name Pat (a special education teacher); children: Michael, Karen, Matthew. Education: Pacific Lutheran University, B.A., 1961; Rutgers University, M.A., Ph.D., 1966. Politics: Democrat. Religion: Lutheran. Hobbies and other interests: Sailing, soccer, working on a sister-city project.

CAREER:
Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY, instructor in German language and literature, 1964-66; Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, PA, began as assistant professor, became professor of German language and literature, 1967-2001, professor emeritus, 2001—, also served as faculty director of service-learning.
