OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born June 12, 1932, in Binghamton, NY; died of renal failure January 5, 2003, in Wheaton, IL. Sociologist, educator, and author. Fahs taught sociology at Wheaton College in Illinois from 1981 until his retirement twenty years later. The educator, who had intended originally to become a missionary, dedicated much of his attention to the plight of the homeless. Within the academy he worked and traveled the world with the Wheaton College human needs and global resources program, and he mentored educators in other countries, including the former Soviet Union. In the non-academic community Fahs worked at homeless shelters and chaired the Wheaton Special Task Force on Homelessness. In 2002 he was awarded the Studs Terkel Award of the city of Wheaton. Fahs also worked as a medical sociologist in Saint Paul, Minnesota, first for the Northlands Regional Medical Program, then with Research Coordinators Incorporated. Fahs was the coauthor of the book Health Manpower for the Upper Midwest. Together with his wife Joyce Fahs and another couple he wrote Conversations on Sex and Love in Marriage.
