SIDELIGHTS: The name Martin Harry Greenberg appears on the covers of a huge array of anthologies and collections. As editor or coeditor, he covers straight fiction, science fiction, fantasy, mystery, literary studies, children's literature, and many other topics. Though Greenberg's books are not typically the kind that receive extensive critical notice, several reviewers have acknowledged his contribution to modern publishing. Booklist critic Connie Fletcher, for instance, called a 2001 release, The World's Finest Mystery and Crime Stories, "a standout among mystery anthologies," while the fantasy collection Oceans of Space was characterized by Booklist contributor Regina Schroeder as "classic escapist fare, taking us far from the concerns of here and now."
"I have tried in my recent work to combine the insights contained in the literature of science fiction with those contained in social science research," Greenberg once told CA: "I have found science fiction to be the most important and relevant form of literature for our time."
Greenberg has teamed up with prominent writers and editors such as Isaac Asimov, Tom Clancy, Robert Silverberg, Jane Yolen, Ed Gorman, and Charles G. Waugh, to name but a few. His list of publications stands at well over one thousand, with scores of books underway at the same time. In 1995, after winning a lifetime achievement award from the Mystery Writers of America for his anthologies, and after having toiled for decades as both editor and college professor, Greenberg retired from teaching to devote his full energies to book development. His Green Bay, Wisconsin, Tekno Books has developed hundreds of titles since its founding in the late 1990s.
Writing in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Dave Tianen noted, "If Martin H. Greenberg were any more prolific, he would almost have to be a gerbil." What began as a hobby for Greenberg in 1970, has burgeoned into much more than a cottage industry. Greenberg told Tianen, "I've made a lot of really good friends including people I was reading as a kid like Mickey Spillane and Fred Pohl, and most of them were really nice people when you met them. I have very good people working for me … I feel extremely fortunate to have stumbled into this. I really love it."
