HEAD, Robert V. 1929-2003


OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born March 27, 1929, in Yankton, SD; died February 28, 2003, in Fredericksburg, VA. Business manager, editor, and author. Head was a systems and information resources manager who also edited and wrote computer technology books. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948, he graduated from George Washington University with a B.A. in 1952. In the late 1950s and early 1960s he worked for IBM and General Electric and was briefly a staff member of the Systems Research Institute in New York City. During the 1960s he held several managerial positions with companies in California, including Security Pacific National Bank and Computer Sciences Corp. In 1967 Head founded and became president of Software Resources Corp. in Los Angeles, before selling the company the next year and working as an information systems consultant and writer. During the 1970s he was an information resources management official for the U.S. Agricultural Department, and in 1981 became president of the Company for the Analysis and Planning of Information Technology, a business based in Washington, D.C. Head was a prolific writer and contributor of articles to bank, automation, and computer journals, and from 1996 to 1997 was editor of Inform magazine. He also wrote several books about information systems and management, including Manager's Guide to Management Information Systems (1972) and Planning Techniques for Systems Management (1984), and was editor of Document Management: The Essentials (1997).
