SIDELIGHTS:
Madeleine Homan is a coach who cofounded Coaching.com with Scott Blanchard, son of renowned business consultant Kenneth H. Blanchard, author of The One-Minute Manager and sixteen other best-selling business advice books. In their own book, Leverage Your Best, Ditch the Rest: The Coaching Secrets Top Executives Depend On, they show how people can get off the track in pursuing their goals and become their own worst enemies. They provide guidance as to how to take responsibility and make the changes necessary for success, which they note is defined by the individual, not a generic set of descriptors. They draw on the experiences of approximately eighty career coaches in reaching their conclusions.
The book begins with a section called "The Scrub-down," which contains a list of forty true-or-false questions, the answers to which indicate the two truths the reader needs most to understand. Other chapters include "Master Your Universe," "Manage Your Gifts," "Cherish and Protect Your Valuables," "Name and Claim Your Standards," and "Draw and Defend Your Boundaries." The authors supplement their book with its own Web site, where readers and others can find further information, tips, and advice.
A Publishers Weekly contributor wrote that "this is an upbeat book, filled with practical advice, real-life examples, and numerous exercises. It is almost as good as having one-on-one sessions with an executive coach." Training contributor Jane Bozarth said that "much more than just a book on coaching, Leverage Your Best, Ditch the Rest is an excellent, inspiring tool to help you refocus, repurpose, and clean up your life. Absolutely great."
