SIDELIGHTS: Michael P.J. Kennedy told CA: "I am first and foremost a teacher. My research interests in Canadian literature in general and Inuit literature and hockey literature in particular come from a desire to provide students with information about these often overlooked areas of our country's literature.

"My popular class 'Reading Culture: Hockey in Canadian Literature' has led to the publication of the first two volumes I have edited. There is an abundance of very good hockey short fiction, poetry, and nonfiction, as well as considerably less drama and long fiction in this area of study. My motivation for collecting works and then placing them into a collection with literary integrity was to provide serious scholars and hockey fans alike with anthologies of interest.

"As a writer of creative works, scholarly articles, serious sports journalism, and formulaic columns dealing with sports, I have learned to adapt my material and style to best communicate with a specific audience. Like effective teaching, an effective writer or editor should know the subject matter well and know and respect the audiences and its needs."
