SIDELIGHTS: Harold S. Koplewicz and Robin F. Goodman edited Childhood Revealed: Art Expressing Pain, Discovery & Hope, a collection of artworks created by children expressing their emotional and mental troubles. "The book was created," a critic for Good Housekeeping explained, "to help overcome the stigma attached to child psychiatric illness." Over one hundred drawings and paintings are presented along with commentaries by the children about their problems, including divorce, abuse, eating disorders, and depression. The artworks bear such titles as "My Scariest Memories of My Dad" and "The Frighteness in My Life." Kent Anderson, reviewing the book for School Arts, found that the artworks "testify to the deeply felt expressions of the young artist." In 1999 the works of art discussed in Childhood Revealed were organized into a touring exhibition, opening at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, NY and visiting eight other cities across the country.
