SIDELIGHTS: Joel P. Kramer is an adventure photographer and writer, a public speaker, and an expedition leader. He has been on journeys to New Guinea, the Middle East, Indonesia, Myanmar, Alaska, and in the Rocky Mountains. Kramer's book Beyond Fear: A Harrowing Journey across New Guinea through Rivers, Swamps, Jungle, and the Most Remote Mountains in the World is about his adventures in New Guinea. He and his companion, Aaron Lippard, whom Kramer did not know before the expedition, traveled from Wewak, on the north side of New Guinea, to Daru, on the south side of New Guinea, without the use of motorized vehicles. The pair kayaked along rivers and swamps, then traveled by foot over mountains and jungles to reach their destination. Dangers along the way included crocodiles, insects, leeches, and even cannibals. A reviewer for Publishers Weekly commented, "Kramer's extended journal is an earnest, determined achievement and an often harrowing physical experience."
