SIDELIGHTS:

Alister McGrath has established a reputation as an expert in the field of historical theology. In addition to his work on historical subjects, he frequently addresses the challenges facing established religion in the modern world. In The Journey: A Pilgrim in the Lands of the Spirit, he uses the familiar metaphor of spiritual life as a journey, one which may have many frustrating setbacks, especially until one recognizes the need for navigational tools on that journey. In relating his own story, as Doris Donnelly stated in America, McGrath shows how he finally realized that he "needed a map, a compass, companionship and the willingness to try a new route" to move forward in his life. He cautions against approaching Bible study as a purely intellectual exercise, urging readers to engage themselves emotionally as well. McGrath advises looking to great writers of the past for guidance, and provides words of wisdom from luminaries such as Jonathan Edwards, Martin Luther, J.I. Packer, and C.S. Lewis. McGrath does not try to "contemporize" the spiritual journey, advised Donnelly.

In The Unknown God: Searching for Spiritual Fulfillment, McGrath addresses the human longing for something that will fully satisfy the soul and concludes that the only thing that can accomplish this is God. Short chapters with vivid illustrations present ideas from great thinkers, ranging from Plato to Kierkegaard, all pointing to the Creator as the only real source of fulfillment. Reviewing the book on the Presbyterian Layman Web site, Robert P. Mills commented: McGrath "has a keen appreciation of issues confronting contemporary Christians." A Publishers Weekly writer declared that the author's reflections "are elegantly written." Ray Olson's assessment in Booklist gave particular praise to McGrath's "beautiful language."

With 2001's In the Beginning: The Story of the King James Bible and How It Changed a Nation, a Language, and a Culture, McGrath traces the history of the King James Bible and its effect on politics, culture, industry and literature. Specifically, the author focuses on the Bible's translation, and contains numerous illustrations to accompany the text. Many critics enjoyed McGrath's many additional features that accompanied this history, such as a chronology and list of comparative translations. In the Beginning provides "informative appendixes which are unique to his work," wrote Library Journal contributor Michael W. Ellis. Others found that the author was able to make his points and demonstrate his findings in a strong manner. McGrath presents his arguments "with an admirable clarity," observed Simon Winchester in a review for the New York Times Book Review.

The following year, McGrath published The Future of Christianity, which analyzes trends the author sees in Christianity around the world. Pulling information from a wide range of global sources, he begins by examining how Christianity fared during the course of the twentieth century. McGrath moves on to follow the resurgence of certain forms of Christianity, including fundamentalism and "megachurches" that have been gaining momentum through the turn of the twenty-first century. Overall, readers responded positively to this book, citing McGrath's diligence to research and skill in writing a well-crafted argument. The Future of Christianity is a "succinct, accessible assessment" of what has been happening with Christianity, noted International Bulletin of Missionary Research contributor Thomas A. Askew. Others found the author's work to be more grounded in fact than other books covering similar topics. McGrath "offers a more academic and theological response to religious megatrends," wrote Philip Jenkins in a review for Books & Culture.

McGrath followed up The Future of Christianity with A Brief History of Heaven. Instead of looking forward, McGrath looks back through time to examine various writers' and poets' visions of heaven mainly from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries. Taking these concepts of heaven and salvation, McGrath analyses their effect on their audiences and Western culture as a whole. Once again, critics lauded McGrath for his efforts. A Brief History of Heaven is an "accessible and thorough narrative," wrote one Publishers Weekly contributor. McGrath's writing and observations are "delightfully lucid and insightful," noted Joyce Smothers in a review for the Library Journal.

In 2004, McGrath published The Twilight of Atheism: The Rise and Fall of Disbelief in the Modern World. In this work the author examines the relationship between atheism and organized religion, and how atheism has recently seen a strong decline as an intellectual force. McGrath himself was once an atheist, before later identifying with evangelical Christianity, although he refrains from personal reflection and instead shows examples throughout history of atheism flourishing while Christian religions faltered, and vice versa. And although the history of this subject could become bogged down in fact and dry history, critics found McGrath's work to be accessible and enjoyable to read. Alister McGrath is an "engaging, anecdote-loving writer," wrote National Review contributor Charlotte Allen. The Twilight of Atheism is presented in "a format that is understandable but not simplistic," noted Darrell Turner in a review for the National Catholic Reporter.
